  • The birth records of our immigrant ancestors, born in the Carpathian foothills, are described with examples under the Old World Records section of this website. The birth records which can be found in the United States are for the generations which followed. The immigrants' death certificates can be found at state archives (and their obituaries often through research services in local historical societies). The information (as in many of these civil records) is not always accurate (birthdates and birthplaces were often a guess by the person giving information for the certificate) but still provides a piece of the overall tapestry of a life. Many of our ancestors were sadly short-lived reflecting the appalling safety record of the mines and the health dangers experienced in the mills and factories of the new world.

Marriage records can be found in municipal and state archives. Civil marriage records give information on addresses, age and occupations and also names of witnesses. Often more information can be found in church records which often included information on the parents and birthplaces of the marrying couple.
