BALTIMORE, MD

Thanks to the persistence of village descendant, Charles Hannon, we have found a number of village area immigrants who entered the United States through Baltimore, Maryland. The reasons for using this port of entry are not fully known as it seems farther away from the frequently cited Pennsylvania destinations and therefore more difficult (and expensive) for the immigrants' journeys. One theory is that upon reaching Bremen, immigrants had to take the next ship that left to the new world rather than paying for stays in the German port. (All alternative theories welcome. Could it have been less expensive to enter the United States through Baltimore? Could there have been an inexpensive train from Baltimore to Mayfield area?)
